World Cup Willies (2018 style)

I nearly fell over with disbelief and laughter this week when I learned that England’s Football Association together with the British Government had launched a bid to bring the World Cup to England in 2018.

Obviously the capture of the 2012 Olympics has caused a rush of blood to the head. (more…)

This Sceptred Isle (Part Three)

So What is the point?

At the end of part one I said; “Give England back to the English but also give England back to all of its people whatever ethnicity they believe they are. As with the United States they should see the country’s flag flying proudly wherever they are because immigrants to that country know where they are and who’s laws apply to them.

During my 200 mile+ working day I see so many flags that I lose count. (more…)

This Sceptred Isle (Part Two)

As I drive around my adopted country I have a chance for reflection on a life now gone and what I have left behind. I feel that in some areas I have been blessed with 20/20 hindsight inasmuch that I can now see more clearly where my birth country was going and that its arrival to its current position was as inevitable as night following day. Shortly before I left Tony Blair swept to power on a wave of discontentment following 18 years of Tory rule. Blair immediately went about forming his much vaunted “classless society” and whether he failed or succeeded depends very much on your point of view and political leaning. Like many of my fellow countrymen I was glad to see Blair and I shook his hand outside Downing Street, not because of any political leaning but because I already knew that I was leaving and was indulging myself with a last goodbye to my home and its traditions. The stories that I have had the most comment about are those telling of the insane tide of political correctness that is sweeping the British Isles. While some have taken my comments about the right to wave the flag of Saint George to be somewhat jingoistic others have seen the point. (more…)
